People have been using their own urine for their health and beauty for hundreds of years! Check out the episode to get all the golden details.
“There is no truth to the myth that peeing on a jellyfish sting can make it feel better. Numerous studies have found that this simply doesn’t work. One of the possible reasons that this myth became popular could be due to the fact that urine contains compounds like ammonia and urea. If used alone, these substances may be helpful for some stings. But your pee contains a lot of water. And all that water dilutes the ammonia and urea too much to be effective. What’s more, the sodium in your urine, together with the velocity of the urine stream could move the stingers around in the injury. This could trigger the stingers to release even more venom.” – Healthline.com
“One of the rare instances in which uroscopy was dead-on came in diagnosing diabetes by a sweet taste to the urine. In 1674, English physician Thomas Willis (1621-1675) was the first in modern medical literature to observe this relationship. He may have enjoyed the sampling process a little too much, stating that the pee on his palate was “wonderfully sweet as if it were imbued with honey or sugar.” His taste test led him to add the term “mellitus” to this form of diabetes, from the Latin word for honey. Ancient Arab, Hindu and Chinese texts also have anecdotal reports of the same sweet taste in urine from patients who displayed the symptoms of what was later termed diabetes. ” https://io9.gizmodo.com/urine-flavor-wheels-helped-doctors-taste-patients-pee-c-5953234
Urine in the Eyes
Claims – “Regular eye treatments with urine may improve eyesight. A few drops of the fresh or boiled urine into the eyes expels conjunctivitis. When lightly boiled and dissolved in honey, urine cures eye injuries.” – The New Times (this has not found to be true)
The picture below is an eye infection from someone using their own urine in their eyes. They had an active gonorrhea infection and didn’t know it.
Modern Urine Drinking
Long Island Iced Pee
Our version of this popular cocktail can surprisingly be made with a non-alcoholic
50ml fresh urine
50ml unsweetened black tea
Fill a tall glass half full with ice, add ingredients and stir. Garnish with a slice of lemon.
Pee Pee facials and all sorts of beauty treatments are still being used. It has some potential to work due to the Urea content of Urine. But the urea is not very concentrated and clean urea products are available in the pharmacy.
•Urea – Urea is used to treat dry/rough skin conditions (e.g., eczema, psoriasis, corns, callus) and some nail problems (e.g., ingrown nails). It may also be used to help remove dead tissue in some wounds to help wound healing. Urea is known as a keratolytic. It increases moisture in the skin by softening/dissolving the horny substance (keratin) holding the top layer of skin cells together. This effect helps the dead skin cells fall off and helps the skin keep more water in.
•Mid-flow urine is somewhat sterile (unless you have an infection, but even if you don’t there may still be bacteria in it), so drinking it in an emergency is legit (although it has a lot of salt so it might not ultimately help all that much for dehydration) The fact that it is sterile though means the ideas to use it to clean battlefield wounds in the past is pretty legit.
Don’t feel the need to drink your pee pee, just because it’s sterile doesn’t mean it won’t make you nauseous and that its not gross •It doesn’t work for jellyfish stings
If you get stuck under a boulder and get thirsty, you can drink it if you want but don’t expect it to work like water does
You’re re-ingesting waste that your body got rid of, now it has to again only more concentrated.
